4 Common Questions Regarding Dental Implant Dentures
Here at Sheen Dental we’re highly experienced at fitting dental implants in Richmond and have been for many years. Over the years we’ve been asked many questions regarding dentures for dental implants so with this in mind, we felt it would be a good idea to answer 4 of the most common questions.
How do dentures and dental implants combine?
As well as supporting individual teeth, dental implants can also support groups or complete rows of dentures. As the titanium rod (the implant) is secured into the jaw bone, it stays inside the mouth permanently. Dentures are then fashioned to clip onto strategically placed implants so that they also stay in position and therefore don’t need fixatives to support them. The dentures can either be designed in house, or by a specialist dental laboratory and are made to exacting specifications based on the needs of the patient.
Can the dentures be made to be permanently fixed?
In essence, yes they can, however at Sheen Dental we would say that it’s probably better from a health perspective that the dentures are made to be removable. Why? Because just like standard dentures, food particles and debris can still get trapped underneath the dentures and could possibly cause long-term gum problems. By removing the dentures you stand a far greater chance of making sure that the area remains spotlessly clean and therefore prolonging the life of a dental implant. In Richmond at Sheen Dental, we favour removable dentures simply because it’s far easier to make any repairs should the need arise.
What about my existing dentures, can they be used for this process?
While it’s entirely feasible that your existing dentures can be adjusted to fit they won’t specifically be designed for this purpose. Therefore it would only usually be done as a temporary measure while you are waiting for your purpose-built dentures to be made.
