dental-implants-richmondThis is a crucial stage of the implant treatment as much of their success now relies on you. Dental implants need a clean and healthy environment if they are to heal properly. By caring properly for your mouth, you’ll give your implants the best possible chance of success and reduce the risk of complications. Here are some tips to help you.

1. Take plenty of rest – We always advise our patients to take things easy for a couple of days after surgery. Usually the fewer the implants, the quicker a person recovers.

2. Use an ice pack – It’s pretty common for there to be some swelling after the implant surgery but you can keep this to a minimum by applying an ice pack to the area keeping it on for 15 minutes, leaving it for 15 minutes and then applying it again. Keep doing this for the whole of day 1 after the procedure.

3. Take medication as and when necessary – You may have been prescribed antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection and it’s important to finish the whole course. If you are in pain then this can be alleviated by using painkillers such as paracetamol an ibuprofen. Follow the dosage on the pack.

4. Apply gauze – If you’re bleeding from the mouth then we advise you pressing down on a clean gauze packing for about 20 to 30 minutes to stem the flow of blood.

5. Eat soft nutritious food – To avoid putting pressure on your implant we would ask that you stick to a liquid diet such as soup for the first day and then stay on soft foods such as scrambled eggs, soup, and mashed potato for the remainder of the first week. Avoid food that is too hot and when you do start to chew food, try and eat on the opposite side of the mouth for he first few days.

6. Do not smoke – this has negative effects on healing.

7. Swelling, redness, fever, or discomfort – If you notice any of these after the healing phase healing contact your dentist right away.

8. Got any questions ring us right away. We want your healing to be as quick, comfortable, and safe as possible so if you’ve any questions at all, we’re here for you.
