Are You Brushing Properly?

Dental implants in Richmond are without doubt the best method of replacing missing, damaged, or decayed teeth and not only restore bite functionality but look really natural too. Dental implants also have the benefit of being relatively low maintenance when compared to other forms of tooth replacement such as bridges and dentures. While it’s true that dental implants can’t fall foul of decay because they’re made from metal, they are vulnerable to infection and gum disease which can undermine and weaken the bone holding them in place, causing them to fail. For this reason it’s crucial that patients understand the important of maintaining a high level of oral hygiene. Not just before and during the implant procedure, but for ever, if they want to maximise the longevity of their investment.

dental-implantsWe’re often getting asked about matters relating to oral health and in particular about the correct way to brush the teeth. If you’re brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing them at least once a day, then you’ve got the right idea. The same applies to dental implants, which since they’re placed into the jawbone, can be treated in the same way as biological teeth. However there are some techniques to brushing which not all our patients seem to have learned. So here’s a few tips to get your brushing like a pro:

  • Get the angle right –In order to reach any particles of food or plaque nestled on and below the gumline, it helps to angle your toothbrush at around 45 degrees when brushing the inner and outer surfaces of the teeth.
  • Using the top bristles – In order to clean the insides of your front teeth you want to be using the top bristles of your toothbrush. A different brushing technique is needed in this area to remove any tartar and properly clean your teeth. We recommend tilting your toothbrush vertically and gently brushing up and down.
  • Don’t forget your tongue – The tongue is as much a target for bacteria as the teeth so it’s important that you remove bacteria to avoid bad breath and possible tooth damage. It’s pretty simple to do by brushing from back to front and from side to side and then rinsing with water. Don’t brush too hard though or you could damage the skin.
  • Set the timer – It takes between 2 and 3 minutes to properly clean the mouth, allowing each area at least 30 seconds. Don’t be tempted to brush harder for a shorter period of time because this can cause damage to your gums and soft tissues. Instead use a soft bristled brush and take things gently.

Hopefully these tips will help you feel more confident about your dental health. Correct brushing and flossing helps with gum disease, bad breath, and the health of your teeth and implants.
