Dental Implant Post-Op Information

dental implants in RichmondBefore your surgery, Dr. Harmit Kalsi and the team will talk you through all aspects of the procedure. You’ll be given full details regarding the healing process to enable you to make a successful recovery following surgery. We’ve put together some top tips to keep in mind, particularly with regard to managing pain, staying healthy, and maintaining your oral hygiene.

  • Take things easy – In order for your body to recover speedily and efficiently, it’s important to take plenty of rest. Avoid any strenuous exercise in the first few days following surgery, particularly anything that involves heavy lifting, or bending over. Don’t forget if you have any questions at all, you can always call us at the dental clinic.
  • What to eat – For up to a week after your surgery we recommend that you stick to soft, cool foods and plenty of liquids to avoid putting any pressure on your implants. Steer clear of all hard, crunchy, or flaky foods as these can irritate the healing tissues
  • Coping with pain – It’s usual to experience some swelling and bruising as well as some pain once the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off. Swelling can be reduced with hot and cold compresses and pain can be alleviated with over-the-counter painkillers such as Ibuprofen and Paracetamol.
  • Avoiding infection – After surgery of this kind it’s normal practice for patients to be prescribed a course of antibiotic medication to reduce the chances of infection developing around the implant site. Be sure to complete the entire course.
