Exploring The Disadvantages Of Dental Implants
If you’ve done any research at all on dental implants then you’ve probably heard and read a great deal about the advantages of having them. The fact that they’re self supporting, lifelike and hassle free is something we hear about all the time; but what about the cons? What about the disadvantages of having them? Here at Sheen Dental we’ve been successfully fitting dental implants in Richmond for many years and we know from experience that there just isn’t a lot of information written about the negative side of dental implants. We want you to keep an open mind so that you can make an informed dental decision knowing all the facts. With this in mind, we thought that we’d put the record straight.
Cost
The first obvious disadvantage to having dental implants is the cost and there’s no getting away from the fact that dental implants are expensive. Sometimes as much as 3-4 times the cost of standard dentures. That said, if you look around you’re sure to see implants from… [insert cheap price here]. The trouble is that in most cases, the price quoted is for the implant only and doesn’t include the abutment or crown or any other procedures you might need. As a result your end price is usually a long way from the one you initially saw. The reality is that if you want long-lasting, hassle-free, life-like teeth, then it comes at a price!
It requires a surgical procedure
What makes a standard dental implant procedure so uniquely different from any other form of tooth replacement is that when implants are placed they don’t rely on glues, fixatives, framework or other teeth to support them. This is because they’re anchored straight into the jaw bone and to do this requires a surgical procedure. Even though the surgery is considered routine by experienced implant dentists, like all surgery, it doesn’t come without risks. These include infection, delayed bone healing, temporary or permanent nerve damage, prolonged bleeding and possible damage to other teeth. That said, these risks are relatively rare and with the right experienced dentist complications fall to just 1%. Even then, a seasoned implant dentist should be able to recognise complications and treat the problem quickly and efficiently.
It’s a time consuming process
Whether you opt for dental implants in Richmond, or Harley Street London, it’s fair to say that they aren’t a quick-fix solution. Unlike dentures, crowns and bridges which can be made and fitted in a matter of days, the implant procedure can take months. The reason for this is that is in order for implants to become successful they need time to fuse with the existing bone so that they can create a super-strong platform. This ‘healing time’ can take 2-3 months or far longer in some cases. In addition some patients may need to have other surgical procedures such as sinus lifts or bone grafting, before any implants can be placed. This can add a further 6-12 weeks onto the process. The bottom line is if you want the very best that modern dentistry allows, then perfection takes time.
As you can see, there are disadvantages to dental implants, but if you look at the overall bigger picture and make genuine comparisons, then the pros far outweigh the cons.
