Implant Supported Dentures – Not Your Average Set Of Dentures
When we think about dentures it usually conjures up images of clumsy, heavy and obviously fake teeth that your grandparents wore. These are so far removed from modern day technological advancements such as dental implants. In Richmond, London however and indeed many other clinics up and down the country, they are leading the way in which we perceive dentures by offering patients a process known as implant supported dentures. So what exactly are they?
As the name suggests they’re full dentures that are supported by and attached to dental implants which are placed either in your lower or upper jaw. The problem with traditional dentures is that they have a hard time staying put and as a result this can be a major issue for the user. However when a set of great looking dentures is attached to dental implants which themselves are secured firmly into the jaw bone, it offers a level of stability like no other standard denture can.
Implant supported dentures come in two guises and these are:
Ball-retained dentures – The dental prosthetic has a corresponding socket which fits perfectly over a ball attachment located on the end of the dental implant itself. This type of denture generally takes four implants to hold it comfortably and firmly in place.
Bar-retained dentures – Here a thin metal bar is attached to implants following the natural curve of your jaw. The prosthetic dentures then fit snugly on to the metal bar. A skilled dentist should use anywhere between two and five implants.
What about fit time?
This is where it differs from standard dentures. Because implant retained dentures require a surgical procedure (eg, fitting the implants) it can take around 5 months for the lower jaw and 7 months for the upper jaw. However depending upon the person it can take up to one year. Therefore it really is a big commitment from the patient. That said, the results speak for themselves…
What about the benefits?
The ability to be able to snap your dentures firmly into place knowing that they aren’t going to move is a huge plus. This means no messy dental adhesives and unlike standard dentures, no continual adjustments. In other words despite the time taken to successfully fit them, the patient is left with a great looking set of teeth that are both long lasting and hassle-free.
