What you can expect
We have to start with an examination of your oral cavity and a discussion with you about what result you are expecting. It is important for us to understand you as an individual because even though we at Sheen Dental Implants Richmond have done thousands of dental implants, for you, it’s a new experience. Everyone has different expectations and reacts differently to dental treatment. Our team will give you a detailed explanation of the procedure and motivate you to ask questions. Once you are satisfied and agree to proceed we will schedule an appointment for a thorough examination. We will need you to provide us with a full medical history including any present or past medications. Using the latest equipment we will invariably take X-rays, photographs and impressions, as well as a scan of the entire interior of your mouth. If you have no complications, we will create your own personal treatment plan using the latest software.
The procedure
Our team will administer the sedation by the agreed method to ensure that you remain comfortable and do not experience any discomfort. The implant dentist will make a small incision into your gum in the location where you have lost the tooth. A small hole is then drilled in precisely the right place at the exact angle required to line up with your opposing tooth. A titanium post is then screwed into your gum which is then closed with stitches, if required. This titanium post performs the same function as the roots of your natural teeth. Titanium is used because it naturally fuses with your jawbone, providing a stable base for your new crown. Normally your gum will require a period of healing and a temporary crown is usually placed over the titanium post. In some cases we can complete the implant procedure in one day.
Fitting your new tooth
Once your period of healing has elapsed you will be invited back to have your new tooth fitted. Our team are past masters at ensuring that your new tooth looks and feels just like your natural teeth. The temporary crown is removed and an abutment is inserted into the post and your new tooth is fixed to the abutment to ensure a sound stable fitting.
After treatment care
We will give you advice on the correct aftercare to ensure the longevity of your new tooth and your natural teeth. You will be able to chew normally and smile confidently in the knowledge that your lost tooth gap has been filled.
