Making Your Dental Implants Last Like Natural Teeth
Many people think that having dental implants will end the problem with missing teeth and poor oral health. As such, they tend to be lax with their oral hygiene. Little do they realise that in doing so, they are putting themselves at risk of more serious teeth problems.
The Truth about Dental Implants
Dental implants are artificial roots that dentists place in the jawbones to support replacement teeth or a bridge. These are ideal for people with teeth loss, as these are stable and durable dental appliances. They last longer than other treatments as well.
But, whilst dental implants are reliable and durable, these are not forever. Time and exposure, combined with poor oral hygiene, may cause these implants to deteriorate and lead to peri-implantitis. It is the inflammation of the soft and hard tissues due to bacterial infection.
Lack of care for dental implants may lead to certain diseases, thus causing problems with the patient’s oral health, appearance and lifestyle. Proper maintenance measures are necessary to keep dental implants and the wearers in good condition.
Dental Implants are Like Natural Teeth
Dental implants can last like natural teeth with proper oral care. However, special materials found in dental implants require special handling as well.
Patients should use interproximal toothbrushes as these can clean the sides of the implants more effectively. They should brush twice daily to remove plaque and avoid abrasions. For flossing, patients should get unwaxed tape or implant-specific floss to clean the implants without causing damage to surrounding tissues.
Toothbrushes and flosses cannot reach some areas around implants. In such cases, patients should use oral irrigators or water flossers to help reduce plaques and inflammation. Patients should use antimicrobial rinses if they already have peri-implantitis, mucositis, and other implant-related diseases.
