The Top Ten Questions Everyone Wants To Know About Dental Implants (Part 1)
Before considering whether dental implants in Richmond are right for you then you’ve probably got a whole load of questions that need answering. In order to help, we’ve compiled a list of the top ten questions everyone wants to know. Let’s take a look at the first 5.
Am I a good candidate for implant surgery
Surprisingly dental implant candidacy has less to do with age and more about overall health. In fact dental implants have successfully been fitted to healthy people in their 70’s and 80’s with no problem. Conversely younger people with ongoing health issues such as heart conditions, or uncontrollable diabetes might not be able to have implants fitted. Before any surgery can go ahead each patient will be given a full health check to ascertain whether they are an ideal candidate or not.
Why should I undergo dental implant treatment?
When you loose a tooth, aside from looking unsightly it will kick start a chain of events that can lead to further tooth loss. A dental implant is not only a natural looking form of tooth replacement but it also stabilises the area, halting further bone loss.
Is the surgery painful?
Absolutely not! Procedures are carried out in the dental clinic itself under a local anaesthetic. More complex procedures may require conscious sedation, but the procedure itself is usually pain-free. After the event there may be some mild swelling and pain, but usually it’s easily dealt with using over-the-counter pain killers. Recovery time depends on the amount of treatment being carried out but can be as little as one day, or up to 4 weeks. Even in more complex surgical cases patients are usually eating normally again in around 2-3 weeks.
Do dental implants ever get rejected by the body?
Implants are made from titanium. This is a known bio-compatible material and therefore won’t be rejected by the body. There might be a very slight chance that the surrounding bone tissue won’t integrate with the implant but this is usually down to other health or lifestyle issues.
I smoke, is this a problem?
Well, it could be! Not just from a health perspective but it can also be problematic for implants. For example it can inhibit the proper healing of the implant itself. That said smoking doesn’t categorically prevent patients from having implant treatment as each case is taken on its own merits so it’s worth speaking to your local implant clinic who’ll give you further advice.
So that’s the first five questions answered. Stay tuned for part 2, where we’ll get to grips with more of your popular concerns.
