What Are The Risks Of Dental Implant Surgery?
Dental implants are the only type of tooth replacement treatment which replaces the entire structure of a natural tooth, including the root. Not only do dental implants look extremely natural, but they feel and function in almost the same way as the teeth you were born with. However, as with all types of surgery there are some risks. To discuss your personal risks we invite you to attend a free implant consultation with Dr. Harmit Kalsi at Sheen Dental. He’s been placing dental implants in Richmond for a great number of years and has extensive knowledge and expertise. Meanwhile why not read on to learn more about the possible risks and side effects of dental implant surgery.
Potential risks and side effects
Although dental implant surgery is minimally invasive and performed right here in our clinic, there are a few risks and side effects that you need to be aware of.
- Pain – It’s common to experience some pain and discomfort as the effects of the anaesthetic wear off and the jaw and gums start to recover. Your dentist may prescribe pain relief medication or you can use over the counter painkillers to ease the pain.
- Swelling and bruising – Again, this is a common occurrence after surgery and should reduce in a few days to a week after surgery. Patients can ease swelling in the early days with a cold compress and after about 3 days use a warm compress to help drain any excess fluids.
- Infection – Infection is a possible risk following dental implant surgery and your dentist may prescribe a course of antibiotics to help combat this. Be sure to take the whole course. It’s also important to keep the implant site as clean as possible.
- Sinus issues – Although this is a rare occurrence patients having upper jaw implants can sometimes experience sinus problems.
- Nerve or tissue damage – Again this is very rare but can happen if blood vessels are damaged. Nerve and tissue damage can cause tingling and numbness which is usually temporary.
How to reduce the risks and side effects
A patient can take steps to reduce the above risks and side effects of dental implant surgery, as follows:
- Follow pre and post operative instructions – The instructions you’ll be given will help you prepare for your surgery and inform you on how to care for your implant following surgery.
Do not smoke – Smoking slows down the body’s healing abilities. You’ll also be asked to refrain from smoking for several weeks before surgery.
Do not drink alcohol – Alcohol, too, can slow down the healing process and can cause issues with bleeding. Avoid drinking alcohol during the healing stage to increase your chances of implant success.
Practice good oral hygiene– This is the very best way to reduce the risk of infection following surgery. Don’t refrain from brushing or flossing, just be careful around the implant site and use a soft bristled toothbrush.
- Salt water rinse – Rinsing the mouth with salt dissolved into warm water can offer relief and aid the healing process.
