What Causes Tooth Loss?
We are seeing a steady increase in dental implants in Richmond, as more adults turn to this treatment to replace missing teeth. Although we’re pleased to be kept busy, as dentists we would far rather patients were able to retain their natural teeth. So let’s take a look at the reasons for tooth loss in adults.
Permanent teeth can be lost for a number of reasons from tooth decay to traumatic injury and even hereditary factors. Let’s take a closer look:
- Gum disease – This is the main cause for tooth loss in adults. Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease infects the structures supporting the teeth. Damage and eventual destruction of the alveolar bone loosens the teeth which will either fall out or need to be extracted.
- Tooth decay – In the event that cavities are not treated, teeth will de damaged and bone supporting the tooth may become infected.
- Tooth injury – An injury can knock a tooth right out or cause damage to the pulp and root which will later need to be extracted. If you play sports then it makes sense to wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth from possible injury.
- Fractured Tooth – A fracture in the tooth can often be caused by tooth grinding. Sometimes this can be fixed with a crown but depending on where the fracture is and how deep it is, this may not be the answer and the tooth will need extracting instead.
What can affect the chances of tooth loss?
- Poor oral hygiene – Patients who fail to brush and floss their teeth on a daily basis are more at risk of developing tartar and accumulating a build up of plaque which can lead to decay
- Failing to visit the dentist – Visiting your dentist every six months for a clean and check up means that any oral problems can be caught and treated at their early stages and any tartar and plaque can be removed at the same time.
- Smoking – A person who smokes is far more at risk of developing periodontal disease than a non smoker. If you do smoke then it’s even more important to attend regular check ups.
- Other health conditions – Patients who suffer from various health conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure and other chronic health issues are also more likely to suffer from gum disease.
