When Is The Best Time For Flossing?
As anyone who has had a dental implant in Richmond, or is seeking one, you’ll know that good oral hygiene is essential before, during, and after the implant procedure. Part of your oral hygiene routine should include dental flossing and here at Sheen Dental one of the questions we often get asked is “When should I floss?”
We ask that all our patients pay particular attention to flossing since this removes any particles of food left between teeth that brushing fails to remove. If allowed to remain, this debris can attract bacteria looking for a place to breed and in this in turn can lead to periodontal disease.
So, should I floss before or after brushing my teeth?
Quite simply, it’s up to you. If you choose to floss first then you can brush away any particles of food that you have dislodged. Conversely, brushing first loosens any plaque between the teeth and makes it easier to floss.
Whatever your preference, the important thing is that you floss thoroughly. This involves taking a fresh strand of floss each day and pulling it back and forth carefully between all of your teeth. Don’t skip doing this just because your teeth feel and look clean.
How many times should I floss?
You only need floss between your teeth once a day, as opposed to brushing, which should be at least twice a day. You can do this in the morning or afternoon but the majority of people tend to do it last thing before going to bed, so that no food particles are left between the teeth overnight. This can also help prevent the build up of plaque which causes tooth decay.
