Why Do I Need A Sinus Lift Before Implants?
If you’ve been considering a dental implant in Richmond then you may have been told that you need a sinus lift. Sounds a little daunting, right? but actually it’s quite a common procedure and one which we carry out on a regular basis.
So what exactly is a sinus lift?
In essence it’s a bone grafting procedure which is necessary when the amount of bone located in a patient’s upper jaw (typically where the premolars and molars are located towards the back) is insufficient to accommodate the length of an implant. It’s usually done before the implant procedure but sometimes both procedures can be carried out at the same time.
When is sinus lift surgery needed?
There are several reasons why a patient may not have enough bone in their upper jawbone to accommodate a dental implants. For example
- The bone may have been damaged through periodontal disease or through another surgical procedure, such as a difficult tooth extraction
- Another common problem is where the size and shape of a patient’s maxillary sinus is quite large compared to their upper jawbone which means there simply isn’t enough depth of bone in which to embed an implant.
What does having a sinus lift do?
During this procedure part of the maxillary sinus is filled with bone grafting material to promote healthy new bone growth. The end result is a thicker sinus floor which can comfortably accommodate the dental implant.
What is the procedure?
- A small incision is made in the gum on the cheek side of the area where the tooth is missing and where the implant will eventually be placed. The gum tissue is then pulled back to expose the surface of the underlying jawbone.
- The exposed bone is then cut to form a hinged section which can be gently pushed upwards into the sinus cavity. This movement of bone also carries the sinus membrane (which is attached to it) along with it, effectively ‘lifting’ what is the sinus floor to a new, higher level.
- The empty space below the newly lifted sinus membrane is then filled with bone grafting material to eventually provide the new bone in which the dental implant will be placed.
- Once the bone graft material has been added the gum is stitched back into place.
- In most cases the dentist will allow a healing period of 6-9 months for the bone graft material to fuse with the surrounding bone.
